Money lent on a handshake is still part of what you own. Without a note, your family may never find out about it.

Money you lent to family and friends: write it down before you forget

Loans between family and friends rarely come with paperwork. Someone needed help with a deposit, someone else with a car, and it was all agreed over dinner. That's still money that should come back to you. If nobody but you and the borrower knows about it, your family has nothing to go on, and the borrower may simply forget.

What to write down

  • who has the money: a name or nickname your family will recognise,
  • the amount and the date, even roughly,
  • where any agreement is: “photo in the note”, “desk drawer” or “nothing in writing”.

If some of it has already been paid back, add that too. The note makes it clear how much is still owed to you or your family, and it heads off arguments later.

In the app: Assets, Investments, Savings, then Other Money Owed.
