Crypto and unusual savings: where your family should look

Bank accounts leave a paper trail. Crypto, investment platforms and other unusual savings often don't, unless you leave your family a pointer.

Crypto and unusual savings: where your family should look

A normal bank account sends statements and shows up in the paperwork, so executors usually find it. Crypto, accounts on overseas trading platforms and wallets you keep yourself are a different story. Without a note from you, that money can stay where it is and never be found.

What to write down

  • the names of the exchanges, platforms and apps you use,
  • the type of wallet, for example a hardware wallet in the desk drawer,
  • where documents and access details are kept, such as “recovery phrase in the safe, envelope marked K”.

Never put the recovery phrase (seed phrase) itself in a note or a photo. Anyone who has it controls the funds. Record only where the physical copy is.

Gold, foreign cash and the like

The same note works for anything a normal bank wouldn't show: gold bars, bullion coins, cash in another currency, money on peer-to-peer lending sites. What matters is the name and the location; amounts aren't needed.

In the app: Assets, Investments, Savings, then Alternative Investments.
