Investments: stocks, funds and bonds. Where your family should look

Funds, bonds and share-dealing accounts are invisible to your family. All they need is a map: where, what, and where the paperwork is.

Investments: stocks, funds and bonds. Where your family should look

Investment funds, government bonds and a share-dealing account rarely send letters any more. Everything happens in an app or in an inbox your family can't open. If they don't know the money is there, it can sit with the provider for years.

What to write down

  • the name of the provider: bank, investment platform, fund manager,
  • the type of investment, for example bonds, shares, funds,
  • where the paperwork is, such as “blue folder” or “confirmations in my email”.

No passwords or balances. A map that leads your family to the right place is enough. Balances change anyway, and the provider will give them to the executor.

In the app: Assets, Investments, Savings, then Shares and Financial Instruments. A share-dealing account also fits under Banks and Financial Institutions, then Investment, Share Trading or Brokerage Accounts.
